Faced with new challenges, parents and children will inevitably take time to adapt. Parent Seminar on
“Parenting at Ease : Ways to Handle Children’s Challenging Behaviors”
(Conducted in Cantonese)
Dr. Eva Lau Yi Hung・The Education University of Hong Kong

Many parents are often troubled by their children’s behaviors and may feel helpless when it comes to parenting. While some relatively severe challenging behaviors require parents’ attention, some troublesome behaviors are in fact normal in the journey of a child’s development. Once parents are able to distinguish between them and deal with them appropriately, parenting can be effortless and effective.

In this connection, the Education Bureau (EDB) has commissioned The Education University of Hong Kong to conduct a talk to help parents identify and interpret different types of children’s behaviors and the reasons for the behaviors and introduce corresponding parenting techniques that enable parents to become more competent in parenting skills. The speaker, Dr. Eva Lau Yi Hung, will explain what the normative behaviors are and help parents to identify the four different types of challenging behaviors. In addition, Dr. Lau will explain how to utilize natural and logical consequences and explore the use of the 6-step approach to dealing with children’s challenging behaviors, which consists of: 1) identifying and defining the conflict, 2) generating possible solutions, 3) evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the solutions, 4) deciding on the best solution for both parties, 5) working out ways to implement the solution, and 6) evaluating how well the solution worked. This 6-step approach facilitates parents to deal with the root cause of challenging behaviors by engaging both the parents and children in the process of finding a solution to a problem, which, at the same time, develops the children’s problem solving skills.

The seminar will also include children’s behavioral problems that may emerge due to increasing family time at home under the pandemic, the reasons for the behavioral problems and relevant parenting techniques for influencing a children’s behavior.

Parent Seminar on
“Emotion Turnaround : How To Promote the EQ of Young Children”
(Conducted in Cantonese)
Dr. Ian Lam Chun Bun・The Education University of Hong Kong

In the past year, Hong Kong has undergone unprecedented changes due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic. Children could not go to school and their social activities and opportunities to play outside have been reduced, which resulted in many children showing more negative emotions and even emotional problems. How should parents help children deal with emotional problems and help them build more positive emotions?

Positive emotions are of paramount importance to children in daily life. Children with higher emotion intelligence have not only more friends but also better academic performance and behavioral adjustment. In this connection, the Education Bureau (EDB) has commissioned The Education University of Hong Kong to conduct a talk in which the speaker, Dr. Ian Lam Chun Bun, will explain how to help children build more positive emotions and demonstrate eight science-informed parenting techniques, including active constructive response, descriptive praises, gratitude journal, exercise and nature, active listening, positive reappraisal, deep breathing and four steps to problem solving.

Using these techniques, parents can promote children’s positive emotions and deal with children’s negative emotions in everyday life. Parents can also teach children to see the good in a bad situation, link up praise with children’s behaviours, respond positively to children’s sharing of “good news” or “bad news” and assist them in improving their problem solving skills, thereby boosting their confidence.

Parent Seminar on
“Diligence Brings Rewards, but Play Also Has Benefits”
(Conducted in Cantonese)
Dr. Ian Lam Chun Bun・The Education University of Hong Kong

As parents, would you agree with the statement “diligence brings rewards, and play has no benefit” ? Is play a learning obstacle or a learning aid? In your daily life, do you play with your children? Are there any skills parents could use during parent-child play to facilitate children’s learning and turn play into something beneficial?

Children love to play. They can derive pleasure, fun, a sense of success and experience through play with others, collaboration and imitation. Recent psychological research indicates that play plays an irreplaceable role in child development. Moreover, it is an effective way of learning that best suits the developmental characteristics of children. Play facilitates not only learning but also children’s physical and psychological development. Learning through play helps children generate various ideas on their own, understand themselves, others and the environment, and develop the creativity, problem-solving skills and versatility. Play also helps children express emotions, build confidence and develop social skills. Therefore, play is an effective learning strategy provided that children’s development and interests are addressed.

In this connection, the Education Bureau (EDB) has commissioned The Education University of Hong Kong to conduct a talk during which the speaker, Dr. Ian Lam Chun Bun, will introduce the characteristics of rough-and-tumble play, construction play, pretend play, and games with rules through a series of concrete examples, and explain the benefits of play in child development. The speaker will also demonstrate how parents can help their children derive more benefits from play by praising their children, reflecting what their children say, expanding their children’s thoughts and ideas, describing their children’s actions, imitating their children’s behaviors, directing the attention of their children, and showing enthusiasm and positivity.

Parent Seminar on
“Help My Kid to Level-up to Enjoy Primary School Life, I Can Do It!”
(Conducted in Cantonese)
Dr. Eva Lau Yi Hung・The Education University of Hong Kong

Parents often have mixed feelings when their children enter primary schools. On the one hand, parents are not familiar with the curriculum and learning mode of primary schools and need to figure out ways of helping their children adapt to primary school life. On the other hand, parents are excited because their children are going to be primary school students, which is a milestone in their lives. A smooth transition means a good start to a child’s journey of learning. In fact, both parents and children need careful planning and preparation to facilitate happy learning as well as the smooth transition. What should parents do to achieve this goal?

In this connection, the Education Bureau (EDB) has commissioned The Education University of Hong Kong to conduct a talk during which the speaker, Dr. Eva LAU, will guide parents on how to provide cognitive, emotional, and self-care support for their children. In addition, the speaker will discuss the importance and challenges of the transition to a child, explain how to set reasonable expectations for children, and help children set reasonable goals. Apart from this, Dr. Eva LAU will also share some tips on how to participate more in their children’s school life. A series of parent-child activities will be recommended to promote parent-child relationship. Before entering primary schools, children need to master some skills in different aspects. Therefore, the speaker will assist parents in understanding the relevant skills so as to facilitate children’s quick adaptation to primary life. Finally, there will be a case study session to guide and encourage parents to apply the knowledge and theories they have learnt in daily life.

“Child Development – From Kindergarten to Primary”
Dr. Tikky To-Chan Sing Pui・The Education University of Hong Kong

Is the kindergarten the same as the primary school? When a child grows up, how will he/she be different? Does my child have many questions like me? If going to school is like walking on the road to learning, we will find that the road of kindergarten is different from the road of primary. People and things on the roads are so different from each other. How do we adapt to the new people and things? To successfully transfer from the road of kindergarten to primary school, one needs to “know the way”! That is to know how to walk. Parents are welcome to get prepared together and grow up with your children. This is the road to success in primary school.
