An Early Child Education institution under
Our School is situated in an independent building of the St. Matthias’ Church. This plot of land (formerly the old school campus of Ling Oi Primary School) was donated by Mrs. Lee Cheng Chiu Chun (李益三師太), a fervent Christian who loved God and loved others and strived to proclaim the Gospel all her life. To commemorate Mrs. Lee Cheng Chiu Chun, the School Sponsoring Body named the school “St. Matthias’ Church Chiu Chun Kindergarten”.
In 1969, Ling Oi Primary School moved to a new campus in a nearby neighbourhood. Reverend Cheung Pui Yan, then vicar of St. Matthias’ Church (later became the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Taiwan), and the Vestry of St. Matthias’ Church were deeply aware of the importance of early childhood education. They shared the view that since the Anglican Church already had a primary school in Yuen Long operating in the spirit of Christ and offering quality primary education to the district, they should start a kindergarten to provide quality early childhood education to the community so that more children could know our Lord Jesus Christ at an early age.
In August of the same year, St. Matthias’ Church Chiu Chun Kindergarten was founded. On the first day of school, a total of seven students came to class. By September, another ten more children came to the School. After the operation of the school bus which picked up children near Small Traders New Village and Shui Ngau Leng, the number of students increased day by day, and within two years, there were more than 200 students. From July 1979 to August 1980, due to the redevelopment of St. Matthias’ Church, our Kindergarten was temporarily relocated to St. Peter’s Church Kindergarten (Castle Peak), using their campus for classes. When the new Church was completed, we moved back to this current location. Whereas there were only six classrooms in the old school building, the new school building was equipped with nine classrooms.
Today, the Kindergarten is operated as a non-profit organization under St. Matthias’ Church, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui West Kowloon Diocese. We have participated in the “Kindergarten Education Scheme” of the Education Bureau of the Government of the HKSAR for half-day kindergartens. The Kindergarten offers morning and afternoon sessions for K1, K2 and K3. There are more than 400 students each year. The school building is three storeys high with 11 registered classrooms. There are more than 30 teaching and non-teaching staff. All our teachers have received professional training and have obtained either a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or a Certificate of Kindergarten Education. In addition, we have designated teachers for English, Putonghua, Religious Education. We also have school social worker to help students and parents.
