Education Bureau
What is required for effective communication between parents and children? The EDB has invited Ms Joanne Chu, a registered clinical psychologist, to introduce to parents the four steps to heartfelt communication in order to encourage children to share more of the happenings in their daily lives and their feelings. She suggested parents to change their inherent mindset and adjust the way they used to speak, then make use of open-ended questions to encourage children to share more. Besides, parents will learn how to respond when listening to their children in order to make them feel accepted, how to guide children to solve problems from different angles and perspectives as well as some tips in getting along with their children.

Parents certainly want their children to go to school happily, but when they enter Primary One, they have to face many new changes, including changes in the environment, changes in learning patterns, the need to meet new friends, etc. Apart from giving them a period of adaptation, emotional support cannot be ignored. Children may not know how to express themselves in words, so parents need to carefully observe and take care of their children’s emotional needs!

“Promoting Young Children’s Learning
(Conducted in Cantonese)
Dr. Ian Lam Chun Bun・
As parents, what kinds of games do you play with your young children in your daily life? Are there any skills parents could use during parent-child play to facilitate children’s learning? In fact, not only can play facilitate children’s learning, it can also promote children’s physical and mental health, stimulate their sensory development and develop their abilities in different aspects.
Sensory development (sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing) is important to the growth of young children. Sensory stimulation can help children acquire knowledge and skills. Sensory stimulation can also promote children’s learning motivation, and children can learn and train their skills through play. Research findings reveal that parents can facilitate children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development through sensory stimulation. However, what exactly can parents do to introduce more sensory stimulation and play into their children’s lives?
In this connection, the Education Bureau (EDB) has commissioned The Education University of Hong Kong to conduct a parent-child sensory game workshop during which parents will make six different sensory bottles with their children, including the sound bottle, the theme bottle, the mindful bottle, the water-oil bottle, the magnet bottle, and the smell bottle. The speaker, Dr. Ian Lam Chun Bun, will talk about how parents can help children explore different sounds, colors, textures, and smells when making the bottles, and parents can try these skills right on the spot. The speaker will also teach parents to use sensory games to engage their children in different activities, promoting children’s language ability, executive functioning, and creativity at home.

Self-directed learning means that students initiate and direct their own learning. Some people believe that self-directed learning is an important element in fostering lifelong learning. The COVID-19 outbreak and the dramatic shift in teaching and learning models have highlighted the importance of self-directed learning. How can self-directed learning improve children’s learning motivation? How can parents cultivate children’s independent learning ability?

Parent Seminar on
“Let Kids Go, Let Kids Grow –
(Conducted in Cantonese)
Dr. Cheung Sum Kwing・
In daily life of young children, should parents step in to offer help and assistance in every task, even buttoning, dressing, twisting towels, etc. for their children? Or should they stand aside to let children complete daily trivial tasks by themselves without offering any assistance? How should parents opt for? On the one hand, parents may worry that their children become too dependent; on the other hand, they may also worry that their children would lose confidence if too many failures are encountered.
In fact, self-care skills are indispensable to children’s personal development and school life adaptation. With increased motor and cognitive abilities, young children become more capable to perform numerous everyday tasks by themselves. Parents can adopt various strategies to promote young children’s self-care skills. Nevertheless, some parenting practices may hamper children’s acquisition of self-care skills.
In this connection, the Education Bureau (EDB) has commissioned the Education University of Hong Kong to conduct a parent seminar during which the speaker, Dr. Cheung Sum Kwing, will introduce to parents what self-care skills include, and what kinds of self-care skills young children of different ages are expected to demonstrate. The speaker will also help parents understand how to teach young children’s different self-care skills step by step, and how to make use of different play activities to help children practice self-care skills in a fun manner. Finally, the speaker will discuss through case studies, what parents should and should not do in order to motivate young children to master self-care skills by themselves.
